What Is a Facelift?

Facelift surgery (rhytidectomy) is a cosmetic procedure that targets loose skin and sagging tissues in the lower two-thirds of the face and neck.

What Can Be Achieved With a Facelift?

When the proper facelift technique is performed on the correct patient, this surgery can:

  • Reduce fine lines, wrinkles, and creases
  • Lift sagging tissues
  • Trim loose and damaged skin
  • Minimize jowling
  • Tighten skin and tissues in the neck, including vertical banding
  • Restore a more youthful, healthier look

What Are My Facelift Options?

Facelift in new orleans,

There are many variations to facelift surgery. The technique used depends on the patient’s facial features and conditions. Most surgeons aim for the less invasive technique; however, some patients require manipulation of internal tissues, fat, and skin.

Patients must understand the procedure in detail, including the level of invasiveness, placement of incisions, layers of tissues to be corrected, and potential risks before moving forward.

Facelift Under Local Anesthesia

Dr. Khoobehi performs many facelifts under local anesthesia in an office setting. Not only does this option allow patients to achieve the same results as previous, more invasive techniques, but it can also do so without the downtime and risks associated with general anesthesia. The local anesthesia facelift (LA facelift) is performed in an accredited in-office suite, allowing patients to save money associated with a surgery center and anesthesia while recovering faster.

Traditional Facelift/SMAS Facelift

The SMAS (superficial musculo-aponeurotic system) is the muscle complex responsible for many facial expressions. With age, gravity, normal wear-and-tear, and personal habits, the SMAS muscle tissue loses its form. The SMAS facelift/traditional facelift rejuvenates the face and neck using incisions on the sides of the face extending from the temple to the lower hairline behind the ear. Through these incisions, the skin will be detached from the muscles and tissues beneath, and each will be lifted to reshape contours. Any excess fat and skin will be trimmed before the incisions are closed.

Skin-Only Facelift

The skin-only facelift (cutaneous facelift) removes excess and loose skin to create a tightened look. The remaining skin is repositioned to lift sagging cheeks and jowls while improving the jawline. Here, the muscles and fat tissues are left untouched. This facelift technique offers a quick recovery and is ideal for those with good skin tone, muscle, and fat distribution.

Deep Plane Facelift

A deep plane facelift may be the best approach for those with severe cases of drooping and skin folds, which is normal with advanced age and extensive sun exposure. This is especially true for those whose profiles need extensive reshaping. A deep plane facelift involves a highly specialized skill set and requires extensive knowledge and training, like that of Dr. Kamran Khoobehi.

Mini Facelift

Also called a short-scar facelift, a mini lift is a quick treatment that corrects the middle and lower face. Many patients initially consider this technique, but this option doesn’t correct severe issues and usually renders short-term results. Patients who undergo this procedure are most likely to stage a full facelift as a final step to fully rejuvenate and reshape the face to its youthful curves.

Neck Lift

Most facelift techniques, including the SMAS facelift and the deep plane facelift, address the neck; however, some patients have more concerns about their neck region than their faces. A neck lift can be performed without a facelift to address neck laxity, vertical banding, submental fat, and loss of jawline definition.

How Can I Combine Facial Techniques for Optimal Results?

Dr. Khoobehi creates customized treatment plans that require more than one surgical technique. He has found that in order to optimize results, facial proportions must be in harmony — everything needs to be in balance with the patient’s anatomy.

What Are My Facelift Options?

Face

Facial Fat Transfer

Facial aging is just sagging tissues; it is also volume loss. Because of this, Dr. Khoobehi performs fat transfer with nearly every facelift he performs. Combining these techniques allows you to fill and lift the face, achieving a natural, more youthful look. Facial fat transfer uses a multi-step process. Fat cells are taken from the body via liposuction, purified, and injected into the face to restore lost volume.

Upper Face Rejuvenation

The facelift addresses the lower two-thirds of the face, from the tops of the cheeks to the neck. This surgery does not impact the eyes or forehead, even though these areas show aging signs at the same rate or even quicker than the rest of the face. To maintain balance, many patients combine their facelifts with eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to address upper eyelid hooding or lower eyelid bags or brow lift surgery to lift sagging eyebrows and smooth the forehead.

Facial Implants

Facelift surgery addresses lax skin and tissues. Facial fat transfer or injectable fillers augment the soft tissues. For patients who desire more prominent facial augmentation, such as the appearance of higher cheekbones or a stronger chin, facial implants can be used for cheek augmentation and chin augmentation.

Non-surgical Options

Non-surgical procedures have come a long way in recent decades. Years ago, treatments like BOTOX® Cosmetic didn’t exist — now, they are the most popular cosmetic treatment available. Cosmetic surgery is constantly evolving and finding ways to minimize the invasiveness of procedures or enhance facial plastic surgery results. BOTOX® Cosmetic, injectable fillers, Morpheus8™, and chemical/laser peels work to reduce wrinkles, restore facial fullness, and improve skin tone and texture.

Am I a Candidate for a Facelift?

Facelift surgery is chosen by women and men of various ages. Candidacy for this procedure depends more on the state and elasticity of the skin than your age. Those interested want to reverse their most common signs of facial aging and restore a more youthful appearance.

Ideal candidates for facelift surgery are:

  • In good overall health
  • Non-smokers
  • Free from any health condition that could impair healing
  • Realistic in their expectations for their results

How Is a Facelift Performed?

While every facial rejuvenation procedure is customized to the patient and often involves multiple surgical techniques, many facelift patients can anticipate the following:

  1. You will meet with Dr. Khoobehi to review the final details of your procedures.
  2. Your incisions will be pre-marked.
  3. You will be given either local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
  4. Incisions are made that follow the pre-marked lines.
  5. Dr. Khoobehi tightens the underlying muscles and deep tissues.
  6. Once the underlying tissues are adjusted, Dr. Khoobehi drapes the skin over the face.
  7. Excess skin contributing to the aged look is removed, and the incisions are closed.

Facelifts are generally invasive, but the more recent methods minimize the incisions, improving overall recovery and reducing the risk of complications.

Facelift surgeries are performed in our accredited surgery center. This surgery usually takes between three and four hours to complete.

How Much Is a Facelift in New Orleans, LA?

Facelift cost in New Orleans varies depending on the technique used, the extent of the procedure, and all combined techniques. Your cost includes anesthesia, facility and surgeon fees, pre-operative tests, and post-operative dressings and appointments.

While less invasive facelifts that are performed in the office under local anesthesia average $14,000, more complex facelifts under general anesthesia can average as high as $18,000.

Dr. Khoobehi offers financing through CareCredit®, Alphaeon® Credit, and PatientFi.

How Long Is Facelift Recovery?

Facelift surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure. In some cases, the patient may stay overnight for monitoring.

The patient will feel tightness and a pulling sensation immediately after their facelift. This is normal, as it takes time for the facial tissues, skin, and muscles to adjust to their new positions. It is also normal to experience bruising and swelling. These should subside within a few weeks.

Activities must be limited to help create safe and quick healing. You will be given post-operative instructions that will be specific to your procedure. These will likely involve keeping your head elevated, getting adequate rest, taking one to two weeks off of work and your usual activities, and eating a nutritious and well-balanced diet.

When Will I See My Facelift Results?

Due to the bruising and swelling, your results will initially be skewed. Optimal results will be evident after several months once the swelling has dissipated and the tissues settle.

Choosing a reputable plastic surgeon with years of experience in facial cosmetic surgery is important. A doctor with experience in facial surgery will create natural, smooth results that will last for years.

Facelift FAQs

Face
  • How do I know which facelift is right for me?

Dr. Khoobehi offers various facelift options and tailors all treatments to the particular needs of his patients to achieve the highest level of results. A consultation with Dr. Khoobehi is necessary to determine which technique will best accomplish the transformation you seek.

When it comes to a facelift, the age of the patients holds little value. It all depends on the amount of skin laxity present and the goals of the patients.

  • How will I know a facelift is right for me?

Anyone can consider a facelift once the signs of aging start to take a toll on their skin. These patients are generally between 50 and 70; however, younger and older patients can still undergo surgery if deemed to be good candidates for it. Patients’ personal skincare habits and environmental conditions impact the condition of their skin, and concerns can occur at various ages.

  • What happens during my facelift consultation with Dr. Khoobehi?

Your consultation is the first step toward a more youthful, rejuvenated you. During this initial meeting with Dr. Khoobehi:

    • He will evaluate your skin and tissue laxity
    • He will review your medical history and any medications you currently take
    • He will discuss your surgical and non-surgical options
    • He will show you before and after images of his previous patients
    • You will have the opportunity to share your goals
    • You can ask any question you have about the procedure
    • He will develop a personalized treatment plan
    • You will be given your estimated facelift cost and learn about your financing options
  • Can any facelift be performed under local anesthesia?

While many of Dr. Khoobehi’s facelifts are performed under local anesthesia (LA), not all of them can be. Some extensive techniques and combination procedures require the use of general anesthesia. Additionally, general anesthesia can be chosen by patients who would prefer to be completely asleep during their surgery.

  • Is a facelift painful?

Regardless of the type of anesthesia used for your surgery, anesthesia will be used, and you will feel no pain during the surgery itself. It is common to develop discomfort following surgery that can be lessened with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications. Most patients find that discomfort following a facelift is very manageable and well worth the results they achieve.

  • Will I have scars after my facelift?

A traditional SMAS facelift requires a long incision from the temple to the lower hairline, but the scars will be well-concealed within the hairline and the face’s natural creases. With lesser invasive techniques, the scars will be nearly invisible to the naked eye. All scars fade with time and tend to reach maturity around 18 months after your facelift.
