Overview

Hair loss can be distressing for some individuals. When nonsurgical treatment methods fail to offer the result a patient desires, hair restoration surgery using Follicular Unit Extraction can help patients attain a fuller, natural looking head of hair. FUE hair restoration surgery uses robotic technology to track and extract hair follicles with precise accuracy and control. Our New Orleans and Metairie cosmetic surgery office offers the state-of-the-art Artas hair transplant system, which uses a small (0.8mm - 1.0mm), rounded instrument to remove the hair grafts in tiny sections, and transplant the grafts to the front of the head were hair thinning or balding is apparent. The FUE procedure is often preferred over the strip method because it does not involve the use of a scalpel or stitches, nor does it leave any noticeable scarring. FUE creates outstanding outcomes that last a lifetime.

What to Expect

The majority of FUE procedures start in the morning and can last late into the afternoon, depending on how much hair is being transplanted. We use a local anesthetic and an oral sedative during treatment. IV sedation is available upon request. Patients are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and are able to watch TV or listen to music during the procedure. The donor area where the hair will be extracted is located in the back of the head, as this is an area where hair growth is permanent. For FUE, the entire back and sides of the scalp need to be shaved. The ARTAS physician-guided robotic system for FUE uses computerized, high-resolution digital imaging to provide precise visual detail of each hair follicle. The system intelligently identifies the best, most optimal hairs to use for the transplant process. The donor hair, removed in follicular units, typically includes a group of about 1-4 hairs. The robotic hair removal process is performed in a meticulously randomized pattern, so that the hair around the extracted grafts will grow back and camouflage the virtually undetectable, fine “micro-dots” left from the FUE procedure. Once transplanted, each hair follicle will grow permanently in its new location. Some patients may only require 500 grafts, while others may need over 3,000. This is something that is discussed in detail during the consult. In addition, the number of follicles that can be transplanted in one procedure depend on your individual donor characteristics such as scalp elasticity and follicle density.

Best Candidates

Follicular Unit Extraction is recommended for both men and women who do not want an invasive hair transplant approach that will lead to linear scarring to the back of the head. It is performed on patients with advanced hair loss, as well as those with thinning areas who wish to increase density. Patients that wear their hair short and lead an active lifestyle will benefit most from this approach.

During/After Surgery

After the procedure, the patient’s head will be thoroughly rinsed and a protective cream will be applied to the scalp. Rigid instructions about taking care of the grafts will be provided. It is normal to experience a slight pain and tenderness for the first few days following the procedure. The patient must refrain from physical activities to avoid additional swelling of the forehead. Make sure that no pressure is put on or around the treated area to avoid complications. In the initial days following FUE, the short hairs that were implanted will generally fall out to make way for new, healthy hair. This is to be expected. The follicles are alive and healthy under the skin and new hairs will begin to grow in about 3-4 months.

Expected Cost

Follicular Unit Extraction can cost anywhere from $7,990-$14,990. The pricing is based per hair graft taken and implanted. Depending on the complexity of the case and the size of the area to be treated, multiple sessions may be required.

FUE FAQs

How Effective?

The science behind hair grafting has been simplified over the years. Hair follicles are taken from the hair at the back of the head that is genetically programmed to continue to grow. The follicles that hold the transplanted hair are living tissues that grow cyclically. Like normal hair growth, transplantation is an ongoing process that requires a commitment of time. Once the hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about 2-3 weeks before shedding. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3-4 months; this is normal and an important part of the new hair growth process. After that time period, the hair will continue to grow normally and the results will look healthy and natural.

Better Method?

Another popular method for hair growth is called the strip method. There is no significant difference when it comes to the results by using FUE or strip. Both methods implement different levels of invasiveness and the noticeable size of the area from where hair is grafted. In terms of the quality of results, hair growth will be evident from either FUE or strip approach. We will discuss all possible options during the initial assessment.
